“To reduce by 75% the physical and psychosocial stressors among individuals and families inflicted by Nodding syndrome and other Disability Conditions in the selected intervention site in Northern Uganda by 2023”.

Our Services

Main Activities:

​

  1. Management of government funded medication and supportive /supplemental Nutrition including Management of physiotherapy and psychological/ emotional therapies;

  2. Conducting community outreaches, trainings, And Livelihoods enhancement in order to address economic impacts on the community and improve sustainability

  3. Conduct and coordinate research, including collection of data on relevant diseases and treatments, Advocacy and Coordination/Liaison with other implementing organizations/ institutions.

Objectives

​

  • To carryout community awareness outreaches and training of stakeholders on nodding syndrome, epilepsy and river blindness to provide support to children and families affected by nodding syndrome and other disabilities conditions for a period of five years.                                                                                   

  • To establish centers for children with nodding syndrome and other neurological disabilities and primary care providers at designated areas.                                                                                                             

  • To collect data related to incidences and prevalence on nodding syndrome and coordinate and liaise with organizations with established referral and, holistic management system of nodding syndrome.       

  • To provide food security and sustainable livelihood support to the affected children and families in selected clusters.

Achievements

  1.  Carried out Introductory community sensitization over radios and community out reaches and educated communities about trauma and traumatized people and how to help them.

  2.  The staff of CHEPI-U has got training in trauma managing through attending psycho-trauma conferences in the East Africa region since 2009.This enabled them learn more about disasters and epidemics that leave deep physical and psychosocial wounds on their victims. They have become specialists in managing effects of traumatic experiences and disasters using bio-psycho-socio -spiritual approaches.                                   

  3.  Member sand staff of CHEPI-U have participated in the 2013 survey son Nodding syndrome in Kitgum and Lamwo Districts. The surveys were spear headed by Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health and Kitgum Local Government. Case control studies were done on 69 pairs of children with both Nodding syndrome and children of same age brackets but with no history of Nodding syndrome. Members CHEPI-U also visited and provided psychosocial support to children with Nodding in their families. They also visited schools where these children study and have been following very sick cases as well as children who die prematurely of Nodding Syndrome/mental health.

  4.  CHEPI-U has volunteered and trained communities in Lamwo, Kitgum, Pader and Agago on how to manage victim so trauma (Post Traumatic Stress Disorders), mental illnesses, especially children who were also abusing alcohol and other drugs.

  5.  CHEPI-U counseled and provided mental health services many people who were severely traumatized during the war. Over 80 traumatized individuals some of whom had epilepsy, depression, suicidal, homicidal, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms as alcohol and drug related problems have been counseled and many of them are now rehabilitated and returned to normal functioning in their families and communities.

  6.  CHEPI-U has lobbied and networked with many local and international organizations; as well as with government facilities such as Kitgum Government Hospital, Community Based Services/Probation office and Police Child and Family Protection unit on issues relating to domestic violence including child neglect, and other post War trauma on communities.
